Mr. Knowledgeable VI asked:

The 1980 Summer Olympics Games were held in Moscow Russia and President Jimmy Carter would not allow the athletics from the United States participate in the Summer Olympics that year. How did the athletics react when they could not participate during the 1980 Summer Olympic Games?

I was only 28 then, just bought a house, don’t remember too much about it.

Many were furious. They could have cared less about the politics of the day. Some were disappointed but said, at least publicly, that they understood. Frankly I don’t think most really understood. They were young and had devoted their entire lives to reach the Olympics. For many it was their only shot and it was taken away. Not to be out done the USSR boycotted the 1984 games in LA. It was political one upsmanship!! In the end no body won. If I had trained all those years and then had some peanut farmer tell me I couldn’t pursue my great dream, I’d have been pissed too.

They were shocked, hurt and angry. How would you like it if you had prepared four years or all your life for something and then some one canceled it.
65 countries participated in this boycott. In 1984 Russia and 14 countries boycotted the the L. A. Olympics.

My coach was on the opposite end of that–he could’ve gone in 1984 when the USSR boycotted the LA games. He doesn’t talk about it.
