It is the 29th Olympics…but remember — they only happen every four years so multiple 29 x 4 and you get the start of the modern Olympics 116 years ago.

The olympics have been going on for thousands of years. They say the 29th olympics because because it’s like the 29th year of the modern olympics.
I’m pretty sure that’s why.

Yep, there’s only been 29. They began in 1896.
1896, 1900, 1904 and every 4 years after that for a total of 29.
3 were canceled: 1916 due to WWI, 1940 due to WWII, and 1944 due to WWII

you make me lauch read these IOC organizes the modern Olympic Games held in Summer and Winter, every four years. The first Summer Olympics organized by the International Olympic Committee held in Athens, Greece, in 1896; the first Winter Olympics in Chamonix, France, in 1924. Until 1992, both Summer and Winter Olympics were held in the same year. After that year, however, the IOC shifted the Winter Olympics to the even years between Summer Games, to help space the planning of the two events two years apart from one another
